Welcome to our blog. Blog is a word that stands for Weblogue. It's a place for us to start our tech classes. When you come to the lab, you will sign on and come to this blog each time. I change it for every class so each time you come to lab it will be new.



You can even use it at home!



Now, I'll show you how to use it and add comments.

Safety on the Internet P

We are going to be using the internet in lab only at the sites that I have previewed and know are reliable and safe. But the internet can be a very dangerous place if you don't know how to use it.



The site at the left called Surf Swell Island is a game that helps teach you Internet safety. Be sure your headphones are plugged in and click on Surf Swell Island. Defeat all four challenges and enter Treasure Palace to claim your prizes.



One of the prizes is a certificate proving that you have learned about internet safety. You may print this certificate and then cut it out and glue it into the computer section of your planner.



When you have finished all of this, send me a comment telling me 3 things you thought were important internet safety facts.

Mrs. Dunham has been teaching you the states through an awesome song! There are many sites on the internet that help you practice U.S geography as well as the geography of the rest of the world. These sites can help you practice for the GeoBee in January. Fifth graders compete in that.



The Cove site has many useful links to help you study and learn the geography of the world. I'll give you a tour of this site and then let you practice your states for Mrs. Dunham.

Mrs. Tidd did a great job showing us the Grolier website, but it was frustrating not getting to explore it a little more. Now is your chance. Do you remember how to get there? Start at the Alexandria Central Home Page. Check out whatever you want. This is a chance to get familiar with the site.

As I said in the last blog, we will be reviewing for the NYS SS Test in lab. The internet has some amazing sites to use. The site we will use today is labeled at the side as "Loyalists and Patriots".



I want you to do as many of the topics as you can. Please work in order. You do not have to do #5. That's a work sheet.



You have a sheet to fill out and this can be done either while your reading activity #1 (which I am expecting you to read!)or when you get to activity #3. This must be done and handed in by the end of class. It will be a SS mark.

More SS Review

This Study Zone site is really great. The people who wrote it made it very interesting, fun, and easy to understand. Today we are going to another section of this site that tells about Colonial life. This area has very important vocabulary and ideas for you to review and remember for the test. But you can have fun while you do it.



Read carefully any sections that are not interactive. Do the sections in this order...1,3,6,10. Section 3 will help you fill out the worksheet. This is for another SS grade.



If you finish early, you can go back to the Loyalist and Patriot site and watch the movies about Paul Revere and Benedict Arnold.

Time Machine

We haven't had as much time on the computer since we have had to learn how to use the laptops. I thought you would all like to spend more time using the U.S. Mint Time Machine. They did an excellent job with this site. Start at 1778 and do as many of the dates as you have time for. As you are doing this, have an idea of what is happening in the US during the dates you go back to.

School Island

Today I'm going to show you two new sites.



The first one is a site that is used to review for tests and to quiz students on skills that have been taught in Math, Social Studies, and ELA. It's called School Island and you all have a user name and password to enter that site. I'll give you each your information and show you how to use the site.



The second site is one you'll love. It's called BrainPop and is filled with movies starring Tim and Moby who explain many subjects in a fun way. You'll get to see this and enjoy one of their movies today.

Most of the class last time was spent with me having to teach you how to use School Island and BrainPop. It must have been frustrating for you not to have much time on the sites. So today will be a repeat of the last class with a new School Island assignment and new BrainPop movies, but without having to listen to me.



1. Go to School Island and complete your assignment. If you have any questions, call me and I'll give you some help. When you finish the assignment don't forget to use the back button on the School Island website to find out your grade. Then click the home button, logout, and click on the x to get back to the blog.



2. Go to BrainPop. Click on English. There are two free movies I want you to watch and take the review quizzes afterwards.



***First - "Writing Process"

***Second - "Five Paragraph Essay"



Then you can watch any free movie at any of the subjects. To get back to the subject page click on the BrainPop logo at the top left.

Popping Though History

I'm hoping that Tim and Moby can help you review for the test so I've gotten the five day free trial which gives us full access to this site. I know some of you would rather watch Science or Math movies but I got it to help you with the SS test. You have a sheet with the films I want you to watch and the order I want you to watch them in. Try to complete as much of the list as you can but you are to take each review quiz after the movie.



You have to sign in at the top of the page to have access to all the movies.

Put a check on the line in front of each title after you have finished it and hand the sheet in to me at the end of class.



We have this trial until Sunday so if you can use it at home, please do!

Some work and some fun today.



First go to School Island and do the assignment that is waiting for you.



Then some fun. Ben and Jerry's has an awesome Halloween site. You'll have lot's of fun there. While you are exploring it, think about how creative the web masters who created it were. Be sure to run your mouse over everything. If it turns into a hand click and see what happens. Enter at the Jack-o-lantern in the center. Click on Happy Halloween to get to the site.



I was just emailed the Make a Jack-o-lantern site. It is so cool! Try it!
