Just wanted to remind all grade 12 Exercise Science students that we are having our Bell Ringer on Monday, October 22 in the auditorium.



Remember to study all bones, skeletal landmarks, muscles, origins, insertions, and functions of muscles, covered in class.

This message is for all senior volleyball team members, we will not be practising Monday morning but will be gettting touches Monday at lunch in Gym A. Please come to gym A right at the beginning of lunch to set up so that we can maximize our lunch hour. We will be playing our quarterfinal match after school. See everyone at lunch.

Senior Boys' Volleyball team:



I just found out that Birchmount beat Woburn in the City Finals and we now have a challenge match at Woburn tomorrow at 3pm for the second entry to OFSAA!!! I will have to meet everyone tomorrow and set up arrangements for travel. Be prepared to miss your afternoon classes. Everyone must meet me at the beginning of lunch tomorrow for instructions.



Looks like we have that opportunity to go to OFSAA after all!!!

Welcome Back Riverdalians!!!



I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and well rested summer holiday. I know that we will be having an amazing school year and am just as excited as you are to get things going.



Riverdale is a wonderful place where, as the NBA commercial states, "AMAZING HAPPENS". It is a place where learning occurs inside the class as well as outside of the walls of the classroom. We have a tremendous amount of clubs, activities, and sports for you to get involved in and I strongly suggest that all of you do so!!!



Remember that we at Riverdale, staff and students, share a common goal of ...'your success'. Your Guidance counsellors are here to support you so come down and see us anytime --- Mrs. Stevenson, Mr. Robb, Mr. Fick, and myself, Mr. Yee.



To all of you new grade 9 students, you are going to have a great year. Engage yourself in all that Riverale has to offer. All of you can and WILL be successful. If you ever need support, you can come and see me as well as any other guidance counsellor as I am also your student success teacher. I am here to help you, advocate for you, mentor you, and keep a 'caring eye' on your transition to high school. Success is within your grasp --- you can do it!!!

I see that alot of you senior students have started to come down to guidance to get infomation on scholarships....great job!!!!   It's great to see that some of you are getting started on your scholarship research and applications.



We will be having the scholarship information assembly in early October.  This assembly is very important as I will be giving information on the scholarship process at Riverdale and also give you websites to search for scholarships.  The assembly will be at lunch and I will be notifying students by 'blog', daily bulletin, and announcements so keep your eyes and ears open!!!



For all of you keeners, below are the scholarships that we usually inform our students about at Riverdale.  The deadline dates are from last year but they do not usually change much so expect the deadlines to be around the same time.  Make sure you check the websites for the most recent and accurate info on the scholarships and application forms.  If you have any questions, see me in guidance.

55 Division Youth Scholarship


The Criteria for this scholarship is as follows: must be between 14-19 years old currently attending a school within the 55 Division community; must have completed more than 60 volunteer hours and have demonstrated leadership, academic achievement and a commitment to the community.

Ryerson: BMO Financial Group Diversity Scholarship


For traditionally underrepresented groups including women, visible minorities, international students, students with disabilities and aboriginal students.

The University of Toronto National Book Award and Scholarship Program


Candidates must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, intending to begin university studies in September of the current school year. Criteria include exceptional achievement, original and creative thought, involvement in the life of the school and community, and intellectual curiosity. It is not necessary that the student apply for admission to the University of Toronto. Riverdale is permitted to nominate one student. Application forms and criteria may be downloaded from the Admissions and Awards website at http://www.adm.utoronto.ca/awd/natschps.htm.

The B. LORAN AWARD (formerly the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation)

Wendy’s Classic Achiever High School Awards

Honouring Young Women for Volunteer Action. The Violet Richardson award recognizes young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer action within their communities or schools. Herbert Carnegie Future Aces Foundation Scholarship

National Dean's Entrance Scholarship:

Wayne Fairhead Drama Award


This award was established by Wayne Fairhead, a well respected drama educator and executive director of the Sear's Provincial Drama Festival. Mr. Fairhead established this award, upon his retirement, to recognize students' outstanding achievement and contributions in drama and theatre in TDSB schools and/or their communities.

Maurice Izzard Memorial Award - student with a physical disability


This award will benefit a newly graduated student with a physical disability, who plans to pursue post secondary education at university, college or any other centre of post secondary education in the Fall of 2008.

Given to a black student who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident between 17 to 30 years of age. Must have high academic achievement, financial need and have made a recognized contribution to the Black community.

Lincoln Alexander Awards (nomination by the school)


Full-time students who attend senior high school or who will be going to into a post-secondary education program can be nominated by their schools.


The Lincoln M. Alexander Award has recognized young people who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in eliminating racial discrimination.

The James Bartleman Aboriginal Youth Creative Writing Award


Every year up to six Aboriginal students will receive this award for their creative writing talent.  Creative pieces may include, but are not limited to short stories, poems, essays, plays, or songs and must be original work created by the student.

OTIP offers twelve $1,000 bursaries every year. This program promotes post-secondary education for the children of our insured members by investing in their future. To encourage and support post secondary education among young adults who are involved in community service activities. Must have a record of 100+ hours of community service in each of the past 3 years.

Dr. Albert Rose Bursary Program


Bursaries will be available to graduates who live in rent-geared-to-income housing (e.g., Regent Park and St. James Town), including tenants living in non-profit housing, co-operatives. The maximum award available is $3,000, paid in two installment of a maximum of $1,500 each. Awards are also available for tenants planning to enroll in short-term academic, trade, or skills-based training. An application form and instructions are available at www.mah.gov.on.ca or in the Guidance Office.

Mon Sheong Foundation: 2008 Silver Jubilee Awards of Excellence for Secondary School Graduates


(2 nominations by the school – Due to guidance by June 20, 2008)


Nominees will be evaluated and considered for the Awards based on the following criteria: Academic Standing, Voluntary Community Involvement, Leadership, Sportsmanship and other Commendable Traits and Talents. The Silver Jubilee Awards open to all secondary school students, regardless of sex, religious belief and ethnic background.
