Article posted April 17, 2008 at 09:55 PM GMT0 • Reads 129

The students have been assigned questions in the following areas for Chapters 1-8

1) Vocabulary and Writer's Craft Questions (students have this handout in their Novel Study Duotang or in their binder)

2) Comprehension Questions (students have this handout in their Novel Study Duotang or in their binder)

New assignments... The students will be expected to create a "Pictorial Map" of Kabul, the city where Parvana lives. The map must be on large white paper of about 11 x 17 and must reflect the activities of the characters of the story. The map must include small pictures and a short description of the event at that location. Although the students may not know what Kabul looks like, they are to create a visual of how they envision the city of Kabul in their minds. Maps must include a minimum of 10 locations and descriptions, be colourful (coloured in pencil crayon) and be neatly created. The students will receive this assignment in their binders and notebooks.

Evaluation: (Students will have a rubric on how the assignment will be evaluated. The areas of evaluation include: correct and significant locations presented on the map, clear descriptions of the locations, mechanics (spelling, punctuation, capitaliation etc.), attention to detail in the layout and organization of the map, presentation style (neatly created and colourful - no "blank" spots).

ELA Writng Provincial Assessment

Article posted April 17, 2008 at 10:13 PM GMT0 • Reads 32

The grade 8's are going to be taking an assessment on April 22 - 24 for Sask Ed. This assessment will evaluate either their Narrative or Expository Writing. In order to prepare for the assessment, students have been working on different paragraph forms (narrative, descriptive, persuasive and expository), as well as developing Five Paragraph Essays in both the Expository and Narrative Form. The students have been expected to follow the writing process carefully and received daily lessons on how the process will help them organize their writing. The writing process includes: prewriting, outlining, drafting, revising, editing and "publishing" (or creating a final copy). Over the past 3 weeks, the students completed an expository essay that focused on the best invention of the 20th century; and a narrative essay that focused on a favourite memory from this year. These topics were written in a more detailed prompt that focused on the RAFTS model. All aspects of writing the 5 paragraph essays will be evaluated, thus students need to hand in all webs, outlines, drafts and revision tools.

Although the grade 8's are the only ones being assessed, I will have the grade 7's complete a "mock assessment" (no they will not be mocking or teasing the grade 8's for having to write an assessment, they will be writing one for me at the same time). I will be marking both the grade 7 and 8 papers and this will be included on the Reportcard. If I get the results from Sask Ed before the end of the school year, I plan on sharing the results if parents and students are interested.
