With Ms. Diianni in Art we've been considering techniques for making block letters, going from stick letters to thick letters, transforming letters into objects and using the principle of design that repetition of line and shape creates the illusion of movement.

Check out our "Art Boards" by clicking on one of the images on our web page banner! This will bring you to Flikr, a site where we save images of our work. Leave a comment by clicking the comment link below or create your own Flikr account and you can leave a comment right with the image!

A New Winter Sport

Here is a great way to spend a winter day. First, put on a nice warm shirt. You want to be sure you stay warm and purple. Next, fill a thermos full of hot steamy water. Now you are ready to go snow flying!

Some people say only experts should go snow flying, but I think anyone can do it if you use a little common sense. I have heard a rumor that Mr. Brune will be offering special snow flying classes after school at Macoroni & Cheese Academy, but I don't know if that's true.

The best place to go snow flying is on a hill that is covered with snow. First you will want to clear away any leaves and penguins. Stand at the top of the hill and shout, “Hey, everybody, passing gas out below!” Then step onto a New York, point yourself downhill, and off you go.

Snow flying is fun, healthy, and mad. And here is one more tip: everyone will be especially impressed if you can balance a sister on your head or play a piano as you sail by.

"It's all about the details!"

Article posted December 7, 2005 at 03:22 AM GMT0 • Reads 179

Beresford Bennett, a performing artist from Lincoln Center in New York City left us with that thought after working with our class around C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe."

He helped us understand how artists adapt the story for the stage using expression, movement, and props.

We also learned how important details are -- details when telling a story, details when moving, details when expressing an emotion. . .details of life!

"It's all about the details," he told us as he left after our final session with us.

The previous day I was at a professional development meeting with fellow teachers and we discussed and questioned the value of the Lincoln Center program in our schools. After Mr. Bennett left I asked my students that same question.

Roisin, the Wicked Witch in our school's production of "The Wizard of Oz," submitted this reflection. I think she puts it quite well.

"I thought Lincoln Center was very useful because not a lot of people do acting and they never get to experience it and it is a lot of fun. Acting also brings out your imagination and some of the best inventors had a huge imagination. Acting also helps me describe something in a story. First I picture it in my head. Then I act it out and it helps me give more description and use better vocabulary. It's also fun. I hate to say it but most subjects aren't that fun and this is. So as you can see, I enjoyed Lincoln Center, and I think more classes should do it."

Thank you, Mr. Bennett! And thank you Mamaroneck Schools for giving us the opportunity to work with Lincoln Center! And, yes, we're also very excited to see how artists adapt the story for the screen -- we're all going to the movie this coming Monday!

Click the "play in browser" link below to enjoy the movie of our last session with Mr. Bennett. (The movie is approx. three minutes. If it doesn't play you probably need the QuickTime plug-in because it works on my computers!)

Return to the Moon!

CURRENT MOON

lunar phases

The year is 2015. For the first time since 1972, a crew of astronauts is returning to the Moon... this time to stay. Leaving Earth's orbit, then entering lunar orbit, they will launch a probe to the Moon's surface to gather data which will help them determine the best lunar landing site. Their goal is to establish a permanent base on the lunar surface for observation and exploration and as a stepping stone for future, manned explorations.

Are you ready for the challenge at the BUELER CHALLENGER & SCIENCE CENTER?! It's coming up in March!

Begin to get ready for the challenge by observing the moon's phases for the next 30 days (or so). What do you notice?

If you can't observe the moon for whatever reason use the "sticker" above or go HERE TO SEE PAST & FUTURE PHASES. (Is the moon's phase different if it's "central time zone"? Do people in the Rocky Monutains see a different moon phase than us??

That's right, just clcik the edit button, write what you think people should know about Mamaroneck and then click "save"! Remember, though, the world (and me!) is watching so make it appropriate and think about "C.O.P.S."!

I hope to have us really work on this. . .but, gee, when can we when we have the Pioneers project, Buehler, "American Family," persuasive essay, Spelling Writing Project, and, of course, Writing Projects.

Hey, maybe that's a way -- is there someone willing to tell the world about Mamaroneck as their Writing Project??

Anyway, start thinking about it by looking at how a student from Mrs. Davis' Middle School and High School Computer Class in Camilla, Georgia described the place they live HERE.

Notice how she made it sound different than what you would expect?! Wikiville is supposed to be about what KIDS think about where they live! It shouldn't sound like something we would read from the usual encyclopedia or travel brochure. It should have VOICE! Kids' voices!

So, check it all out HERE and let the world know about Mamaroneck!

Commenting!

Article posted March 13, 2006 at 03:50 AM GMT0 • Reads 158

Isn't it great when we get a comment from someone?! It's like a little present, isn't it?! OK, it is for me!

Anyway, I've learned a lot from Anne Davis, a teacher in Georgia. (You'll notice several of her classes in our "collaborations" folder!)

She writes a lot about commenting and how to write comments even better.

Let's try to BUMP UP our commenting!

Start with the PRAISE (What do you like?) QUESTIONS (What questions do you have?) and POLISH (What would make the writing even better?) we use when we revise writing in the classroom.

Then think about CONNECTIONS you think of. (Like when you do when you read.)

But also try some of these comment starters from Ms. Davis:

This made me think about. . . .

I wonder why. . . .

Your writing made me form an opinion about. . . .

This post is relevant because. . . .

Your writing made me think that we should. . . .

I wish I understood why. . . .

This is important because. . . .

Another thing to consider is. . . .

If I could interview someone about this topic I would pose this question

After reflecting on your post, I decided. . . .

I wish you had. . . .

I predict that. . . .

I can relate to this. . . .

This makes me think of. . . .

I discovered. . . .

I don’t understand. . . .

I was reminded that. . . .

I found myself wondering. . . .

If we send good comments we'll probably get good comments!

Thanks so much ladies! (Why DIDN'T any boys want to talk about it?! What's so good about lunch anyway?!)

Return to the Moon??

Article posted March 17, 2006 at 04:29 AM GMT0 • Reads 161

bgbuehler

The year is 2015. For the first time since 1972, our crew of astronauts returned to the Moon... this time to stay. Leaving Earth's orbit, then entering lunar orbit, we launched a probe to the Moon's surface to gather data that helped us determine the best lunar landing site. Our goal is to establish a permanent base on the lunar surface for observation and exploration and as a stepping stone for future, manned explorations.

What do you think of the challenge we took at the BUELER CHALLENGER & SCIENCE CENTER?!

Reflect on the experiences you had in pre-flight astronaut training and at the Buehler Science Center.

1. What team were you a part of and what were your responsibilities?

2. What was the most significant (important) information you collected during the mission?

3. What was the most difficult part of your job?

4. If you had the chance to fly again, what things would you do differently?

5. Should the United States return to the moon? Is it an exciting goal or a waste of money? Support your answer with details & examples.

Look for our reflections here over the next few days.

We all pulled our wagon trains together last week, gathered 'round the campfire and had a good ol' square dance!

Mynor cut in on my dance partner around 7:45 so I left to check the oxen. Sorry if I didn't get your picture!

Total Solar Eclipse Live from Turkey!

This is about an hour long newscast from Turkey by folks from the San Francisco Exploritorium Museum. They explain what a solar eclipse is pretty well, but drag the video slider about half way through to jump right to the action!

Nothing like being there, though. . . .

We decorated paper shopping bags with our Kindergarten partners in Ms. Gross' class and brought them over to the A & P on Earth Day. We sure hope people are inspired to reuse the bags when they shop!

Thanks, Mr. Ahlness, for setting this project up! Go HERE to visit his class!

The American Family!

After studying the regions of the United States, our class got together in "families" and competed in the "American Family Contest" against the other 5th grades classes!

We had to convince the judges that one region in the USA was the best for our "family." We also visited the region on a "virtual field trip" and sent home postcards to friends or family about the region.

Check out the postcards wnd some things we learned about the regions by clicking on any of the "American Family Postcard" links!

What kind or person are you right now in 5th grade? What kind of person do you hope to be in 12th grade?

What are you good at right now in 5th grade? What do you hope to be good at when you graduate 12th grade?

What else would your 12th grade self want to remember about your 5th grade self?
