Kaitao Book Fair

Article posted June 13, 2009 at 09:15 AM GMT0 • Reads 617

In May we had our bi-annual Book Fair. The theme was 'pre-historic' and to get everyone in the mood, the school librarians helped to turn the Library into a bit of a jungle and dressed as cave people.  We ran a competition where students had to create a prehistoric creature using only recycled materials. They could enter individually, as a group or as a class.  The response was wonderful.  During the fair the Librarians entered into the spirit by dressing up as cave men and women.  Over the week students, staff and parents purchased almost $1500 worth of books which meant that the Library was able to purchase around $450 worth of books the children had especially wished for.  Well done everyone and a special thanks to parents and Kaitao staff for their awesome support.

Dewey and Louie have a special message for you.

We've heard some amazing  stories about why library books couldn't be returned on time.

Please help me find a story

Article posted June 19, 2009 at 03:56 AM GMT0 • Reads 53

What can I read to Isabella?

I just love my little grand-daughter and I can't wait to read stories to her.

Please help me build up a cool library for Isabella, by telling me your favourite story as a little girl or boy. Just click on the word comment to give me your recommendation.

I think Isabella is trying to tell you what kind of stories she likes. Hope you can interpret 'baby language.'

Book Review

Title SCOOP AND SCRIBE

Author Tommy Kapai Wilson

Scoop and Scribe are two young news reporters for their local newspaper the Panui Press. It looks like another slow news day when all of a sudden a spirit (Koro Whetu) comes to them and tells them that they have been chosen to search for the seven lost stars of Matariki. They’re going to go on the adventure of a lifetime. They venture all over new Zealand, and on their journey they will come across Tane Mahuta, Pania of the Reef, and they will even need to awake a sleeping giant. They get to experience a river boat ride as well as a helicopter ride. Mostly they travel in their van, named the wicked waka. I enjoyed this story it, even though it is a novel, the places are real and some of the story ties in with real events that have happened in Aotearoa. The one thing I think would make the book better, would be to have a map at the start of each chapter .This book is available in the library and I recommend it

Yay! It's the holidays!

Article posted July 2, 2009 at 09:34 AM GMT0 • Reads 43

Phew! It's all go at the Library.  We have so many things on the boil.

Firstly we're chasing those children who still have library books to return.  We're putting all the books back on the shelves in the right order because SOME PEOPLE (not you I'm sure) just put them back in any old place.

We're tidying our back room because we keep falling over things when we go in there.

Ms Lewis is flat out processing some really cool new books for next term....  Watch this space I'll tell you about some of them later.

We've got a huge box of  books requiring hospital treatment because they've been 'loved' too much.....are you feeling sorry for us yet?

I've been busy developing the DIGIPOND which is our School Library Wiki.  I hope you're all going to have fun using it next term. Plus I've begun updating our Library web pages becasuse Mr Fowler told me they were old-fashioned!

In amongst all this we've had the privilege of hosting the Maori speeches in the Library. They were 'tino pai.'

We're cooking up another competition for you next term.  It's a bit of a mystery to solve.

Hope you are all enjoying your holidays.  I just found a really cool games site that Mums and Dads would approve of because the games are (sshhh!) educational.  If you're feeling bored, check out http://www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/ . There are maths and language games and even a couple of geographic ones.  Go on you know you want to!

Under the Mountain

Have you seen the trailer to the movie version of Maurice Gee's great story "Under the Mountain' yet?   I'm picking a great renewed interest in the story when this movie hits our screens in December.  Why not get a 'heads up' and read the book first!  That way you'll be able to compare the characters on screen with the ones you will create in your own head.  Oooh!  On second thoughts maybe you shouldn't view this trailer....................... until after you've read the book.

Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

Article posted July 17, 2009 at 12:26 AM GMT0 • Reads 53

I went to see Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince last night and now I want to go and read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows all over again but I have a feeling a few of you will want to do the same.     First in Best Served!

Did you think the movie lived up to the book's expectations?  Leave a comment and let me know what you thought.  I loved Luna Lovegood, (she is so whimsical) and watching Ron play Quidditch!

Twilight

Article posted July 20, 2009 at 04:59 AM GMT0 • Reads 41

Attention Twilight lovers! You will be delighted to know that Kaitao Library has now acquired a second copy of the novel through the generous donation of a lady who lives in Arizona. She visited us in Term One with the Grand Circle group and has made good on her promise to send us a copy when she returned home. This means those of you who have been waiting for your chance to read this book for so long will now be able to read it much sooner. How lucky we are to have friends in faraway places who think of us and go to all that trouble! Please show your gratitude by returning the book quickly to the library when you have finished reading it, so others may have their chance. Arlene if you're reading this, thank you and Kia Ora.

Speed Dating Booking: Fall in love with a book you never met before!

Speed Booking

 CSI: KAITAO

Several staff members have been separated from their favourite childhood books (Some for a VERY long time!)...  The CSI team have managed to track down the books but need your help.  Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to determine which book belongs to which teacher.  Follow the clues in the library to help you... the teachers can't; they've all experienced weird, but hopefully temporary, memory loss.  All correct entries will go into the draw for a double movie pass (with trimmings).

Create a cool book cover and corresponding blurb for one of these titles:

Dude!  Where's My Library Book?

When Librarians Go Berserk!

Kia Puawai i roto i te Whanaungatanga

Transformers 3:  Revenge of the Library Bears

(Templates available at the Library)

HAVE FUN!!

What Mrs Parker has been reading

Article posted October 26, 2010 at 02:34 AM GMT0 • Reads 880

If you consider yourself a sophisticated reader and don't mind some violence in the stories you read, you might like to try this story. "The hunger games" by Suzanne Collins is the first in a trilogy of unputdownable books. It's set in a place called Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. When her thirteen year old sister's name is drawn out of District 12's ballot, sixteen year old Katniss, the heroine of the story, volunteers to take her place.
