Authors of novels and short stories often include descriptive details into scenes to create theme ideas for readers to learn from the plot. When writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey used several references to Henry David Thoreau's quote, "He who marches out of step hears a different drummer." These comments helped Kesey relate the conflict of conformity vs individuality for characters, like Billy Bibbitt and Chief Bromden.
In the movie version, this quote is never mentioned, but the directors put a special effect into the film to convey this conflict for Billy and Chief. What is this special effect? Explain how it works into the scenes. Is it an effective method? Why or why not? How does this special effect influence and/or represent the character's thoughts and actions?
