The Changing World

Article posted March 18, 2007 at 07:17 PM GMT0 • Reads 33

The world is an ever-changing place. Current projections tell us that the vast majority of our children will be working in occupations that have not yet been created. Since the world is changing so quickly, so too must our educational systems. But, if we cannot even fathom what our children will be doing in their future occupations, how can we possibly change the educational system to prepare them for these jobs. It will not be an easy task, but the dedicated staff of the Fort Larned School District is up for it.

There are many ideas to solve this dilemma circulating through the educational world that range from change nothing to change everything. Both extremes have valid points, but they also hold very strong improbabilities and impossibilities. One thing is for certain, as our world changes so must our educational system. We must adapt to the students, parents, and communities that we serve. We must better prepare to reach every type of student. We must develop methods to prepare our students for the future they face. But, again, how do we do that when even the greatest visionary cannot imagine what the future holds for any of us?

The answer is simplistic, yet extremely complicated. We must teach our children how to learn, and instill in them a desire to learn. We cannot envision what our children will be doing in the future, but we can prepare them to learn how to be successful in these future occupations. We will not be able to do this alone. We need the help of our parents and our community members. You are our eyes and ears into the changing world. You will know before we do how the job market is changing, and we need this input. We also need your help to teach our students. Who else knows how to successfully complete a job than the people who are currently training and hiring for these occupations? But if all else fails, please help us to instill in our students the ability to learn. We may not be able to tell them, show them, or train them for their specific future occupation, but we can prepare them with the tools to be successful in any occupation they choose to work in by teaching them how to learn and instilling in them a desire to learn and succeed.

Building Committee

Article posted March 28, 2007 at 06:02 PM GMT0 • Reads 33

USD 495 has put together a group of parents, community members, and school personnel to look at ways to better serve our population of students. Over the course of several years, we have out grown both the physical and instructional constraints of our current elementary buildings. The problems we are facing are not just size related, but also mechanical/electrical/technological in nature. We have reached a point where we must do something. There are several ideas being discussed at this time.

A new building to house PreK-5th grade.

Plans to remodel and add on to our current buildings.

Plans to consolidate down to two buildings by adding on to the Middle School and High School.

There may be a better idea out there that we have not heard yet. Please take the opportunity to share your ideas here or with Mr. Flint, Mrs. Anderson, or Mr. Reinhardt.

Changes

Article posted April 10, 2007 at 03:50 PM GMT0 • Reads 35

There will be some changes in the office at Northside Elementary School next year. At the April board meeting, the local school board hired Mrs. Amy Herter to take over as principal at Northside. She comes to us from Great Bend with a number of years of experience at the 3rd, 4th, and 6th grade levels. Mr. Reinhardt will be taking over the reigns at the Middle School next year. "I am excited for our students, our district, and our community. I believe Mrs. Herter will be a great addition to Northside and the district as a whole," Mr. Reinhardt.

To find out more about Mrs. Herter look for posts on the blog from her over the next several weeks.
