Becoming Jane Austen

By Jon Spence

In this biography of Jane Austen’s life Jon Spence does a good job in his full descriptions of not only her writing years, but also the many years before hand. I found that the history of her family, which takes up a good portion of the beginning of the novel, helps to provide a sturdy foundation for Jane’s later years while also providing some reasons why she took up writing, or how her style evolved. Spence then continues with Jane’s life and the life of her numerous siblings, all of whom influenced her writing career in some way or another. Spence’s style of strict chronological order lends great credit to this autobiography by sticking to the main goal of the book and providing the reader with much needed information as well as interesting tidbits that make the autobiography more enjoyable overall. I greatly recommend this book to all interested in the life of one of the Victorian era’s greatest novelists.
