Internet Safety

Article posted October 8, 2008 at 07:32 PM GMT0 • Reads 96

Having a Myspace or a Facebook page can be dangerous to have on the internet. Anyone could look at the page you created. They could find out information bit by bit about you. Like where you live because of what you tell about or in what you put up on the page.

If you have pictures on the internet of you that have your name on them that's bad. Putting up pictures on the internet is bad because it could attract other people like predators. Also because then people know how you look like. So when they see you they could ask you questions or tell you a lie to get you into their car.

Don’t give out information about where you are at in certain times. If you say that you’re always playing at the park everyday at 5:00 a stranger could come and take you. If you say stuff like that people know where you’re at and they observe you. And they could find out a lot of stuff about you.

Having your cell phone or telephone number on the internet is also bad. Someone can call you and tell you a lie. They also can tell you to meet him or her somewhere but you have to be alone without no one.

I think that we shouldn’t put nuclear waste under Yucca Mountain. We shouldn’t put any nuclear waste under Yucca Mountain because when trains come bringing nuclear waste one of them could crash All of the waste could come out and kill people. Nevadans don’t want nuclear waste in our state. That is why I think that we shouldn’t put any nuclear waste under Yucca Mountain.

I am concerned about the bailout bill. I think that people that put money in the bank should get it back when the bank closes. It is their money and it should rightfully belong to them. It’s making people loose their money that they earned. So you should do something about that.

We should stop the war in Iraq. We can use the money that we are spending on it and use it for other important resources. The soldiers could go back home with their families. Those are the reasons why you should stop the war in Iraq.

We should help the middle and lower class. Their the ones who need our help. Especially the lower class because they are the people who could die of hunger or sickness. That is why we should help the middle and lower class.

Lesley

On a Saturday I went to this thing called God Bless the Animals. I went with this lady named Jessica. She picked me up to go to this place to meet our friends because we were apart of this group called The International Order of the Rainbow for This was one of the events we participated in. We had games planned so the people that came wouldn’t get bored. We were measureing to see how hot it gets if you leave your dog in the car for 15 minutes. It was very hot at 30 minutes and real bad at 45 minuets. At 1 hour its endangered 1 hour and 15 minuets real hot. One hour and 30 minuets really really bad. For 1 hour 45 minuets the dog is dead your a bad owner. What we also did was to see which dog looked most like their owner. We all got to vote and mostly every one picked the guy who got the number one. We got our name mentioned and the leader of the group got to speak in front of everyone. Two of my friends and I got to play around with one of the dogs. The little dog we got to play with was so cute and it was very active. It was the dog who won the game of whose pet looks more like the owner. We took a lot of photos with the little dog. We also took photos with this horse that was their. It was huge. We all got our own packet with supplies that we needed for our own pets. We also made every one that came a packet for there pet. At the end all of my friends and I got to take a picture with the winner’s dog. We also helped out a lot with the stuff that we did.

Skypeing with Mr. Mayo’s Class

Lesley

Today we were Skypeing with Mr. Mayo’s class. We had some technical difficulties at first when we were skypeing with them. So Mr. Crosby told Mr. Mayo to hang up then call back. After he did that they were able to see us but we couldn’t see them. We saw them later on. My table was the first ones to say the story. I needed to speak up a bit but I still did well. My tables rule was to protect your friends identity. Only three of the tables from over here got to go up and say their stories. When they did their stories it was different from ours. They had one random fact about them. They had questions for us like what is your favorite football team and what time is it here when it’s 4:00 over there. They also said what was their rule and other stuff. Not everyone over here and over there got to say their stories that’s why the teachers said that we were going to do the rest of the stories on Monday. The tables that didn’t go last time were going to tell their stories today. Mr. Crosby told us to work on one of our blog post and for the other tables that didn’t go last time to practice their stories. He told us that we were going to skype with them at 9:30am on Monday.

My Mom The Frog

Article posted October 24, 2008 at 06:09 PM GMT0 • Reads 108

In the beginning of the story when Jason’s taking out the trash he screams because he sees something on his hand. When his mom comes out she tells him it was just a wart. So she kisses it. Then she says that she will get some medicine so it will go away. He waits till the next morning and when he wakes up his mother wasn’t there. When he sees his wart and sees that is grew bigger he screams and his sister comes in. When she saw the wart she screamed and said that if someone kisses it they will turn into a frog then he says that his mom kissed it. Then he thinks that his mom turned into a frog. When he goes to get a plate for breakfast he screams again because he saw a frog. Then his dad gets a broom so he could take the frog out. He believed his sister in what she said about the frog. When he was looking for his mom he saw her and blowed her a kiss because one of his friends said that if you kiss the frog it will turn her back into his mom. Then he heard a voice it was his mom she came back from the store with the medicine named wart away. She said it will sting for a while when she puts it on after she said that he decided that he will rather keep the wart after all.

Today we Skyped with this person named Alan Levine through this thing called Skype. He was visiting in Iceland. Once we started talking to him he told us that that they have this volcano named Hekla that erupts every 8 years. Once in the 70s this volcano named Himay erupted near a town. The people of the town thought that it was going to destroy their town so they got on their boats and hosed it down with their hoses to save the town. Then he talked to us about the money over there. He told us that their money over there is worth less than our money. He said that he was going to bring some money to us when he came to visit us. Then he showed us a few coins. One of them had a shark on it, and the other one had a fish on it.  After that he taught us a few words in Icelandic like Skal means Cheers, Takk means Thank you and a few other words. He said that he was taking care of the owner’s house and their Icelandic Sheepdog. In Iceland they celebrate Christmas but not Thanksgiving. He said that he was going to make the owners a Thanksgiving feast but instead of making them turkey he was going to make them a chicken. He said that they were going to make him something. Some of the students asked him a few questions. Another question they asked was if the had any english channels in Iceland. He said no. After that we had to go so we said good bye to him.

She was one of the basketball players. They talked about when they started playing basketball and some other things. Cherlanda started to play when she was 11 years old. She said that she was like a girlie girl but then at this club that she went to they asked her if she wanted to play basketball and she said yes. Kayla said that in her family you have to play a sport and that sport is supposed to be basketball. I asked them how to tall they were and Cherlanda said that she was 5”10 and Kayla said that she was 6 feet high. They said that tomorrow  they are going to play against New Mexico. They also said that the toughest team they’ve played against is Louisville. We asked them if they lost against them and they said that they won. One of them said that the farthest place that they have gone to is The Virgin Island. They have also been to many places in the United States and a few other places. One of them said that it was a good thing to play a sport in collage. They said that they’ve played 16 games in total. They won 9 games and lost 7 games. Cherlanda said that that while she was practicing she landed on her knee wrong and broke her knee cap. She couldn’t play basketball for a year. When she got back to playing basketball she couldn’t play as well as she used to before she broke her knee cap. She broke some of her fingers. They said that they were trying to arrange for us to go to one of their basketball games.

When Juan Came To Visit

Article posted January 27, 2009 at 10:56 PM GMT0 • Reads 103

Lesley

When my brother Juan came to visit my classroom.

It was around 12:10pm right after recess. Once he came in he introduced himself to us and told us what he wanted to be and stuff like that. He told us that he wants to be a pediatrician. A pediatrician is a doctor who specializes in kids. He said that he is planning to go to UNR for 4 years. After UNR he’s going to apply for medical school. Before he gets accepted or gets declined they tell him to take a certain test which is called a MCAT. He also said that he was planing to go to medical school for 4 years. One of the other things he said is that he has to do community service at hospitals and other places because if he wants to be a doctor. To go to UNR for one year it costs about 14,000 dollars a year. He said that it’s about 60,000 dollars for four years at collage. Mr. Crosby also asked him how much money he spent on books for all of his classes that he took. He said about 450 dollars. He also said that the most expensive book he got was about 130 dollars. For the up   coming seamster he’s taking chemistry, biology, english, music, and math. When he was in elementary school it was very difficult for him to learn or to do his homework because when he would do his homework both of his parents only knew spanish so they couldn’t help him. When he was in Mr. Crosbys class he would mainly get a C. By the time he was in 6 grade he told himself that he wanted to do better in school and to go to college. He told us to do good in school and that we needed to ask questions if you don’t understand it. During his eighth grade summer he joined UNR. When he was in high school he got chosen by UNR to go to Hawii. He was one of the 6 students that got to go. While he was in Hawii he got to go inside a lab that dissected a cat and a lambs eye. He got many scholarships. He got the Millennium Scholarship, Hot August Nights scholarship, He also got scholarships from Sparks High School because that was the school that he went to, Athletic scholarship, and a Ronald McDonnell scholarship. Another scholarship that he got was being the first one to graduate high school in his family. In collage the teachers are very strict. If your sick and the assignment that the teacher gave you was due on that same day. The collage teacher wouldn’t care if you were sick and that you had to turn it in on that day. He told us that the high school teachers aren't that strict like the collage teachers. One of the things that he told us is that its important to get along with each other.

Lesley Lechuga Gomez

Today after intervention class we went to a field trip to the Reno Bike Project on 541 East 4th Street Reno, Nevada. The web site that they have is www.renobikeproject.com. Once we got there Noah introduced himself to us. He also introduced Kyle and Anthony. Kyle was the one who visited us last time. Anthony is their mechanic. Mr. Crosby let me take pictures with a camera. Noah told us to follow him because he was showing us around the place. First he showed us a bike that Anthony (mechanic) fixed because it was all beat up. Then he showed us a lot of other bikes in the back. Then he told us that we could go walk around. I got to go to the top where even more bikes were at. We got a few things from them like stickers, pins to where, a reno passport, and a picture that had the street and web site on it. I got to sit on a chair that they made that was made up of bicycle parts. It was very comfortable. Someone asked how they got that bike. Kyle said that someone who used to work there made it because they have an art show every year  to raise money for the store. Since no one bought it they kept it to have in their store. It was a very comfortable chair. I got to take pictures of Anthony (mechanic) working on a bike. We were there for at least a hour. When we came back to school we talked about the field trip and if we liked going over there. I really liked going over there. After we talked about the field trip we went to lunch.

The exotic thing about sea turtles is that they are found in all the world’s ocean except the Arctic ocean. There are 7-8 species of sea turtles. They have been here before dinosaurs went extinct. They are found in Mexico, Central America and other places. When the Leatherback Sea Turtle are washed up on to the beach they mistake plastic for jellyfish. But the most pleasant thing about sea turtles is that they are found in all the world’s ocean except the Arctic ocean.

The special thing about our ball of fire the Sun is that it is the biggest star in our Solar System. The Sun is as hot as burning lava. It comes up at dawn and sets down at sunset. It shines us light for the day that surrounds us. The Sun makes me feel great like when I am with my family. But the fascinating thing about our Sun is that it is the most sizable thing in our Solar System.

This is my first year blogging. My favorite thing about blogging is leaving comments and writing blog post. What I like to do is go and check if my blog post that I posted were there. Blogging teaches you how to spell more, explain more, and how to check for mistakes on your blog post. What I would like to do more is write more blog post about what I like to do or stuff like that. If I wasn’t blogging I would miss leaving comments and writing blog post. Blogging also teaches you how to explain more parts and look for better words to use in your blog post. You learn more on how to check for correct English. A hard thing about blogging is searching for mistakes on your blog post.

Amazing Softball Story

Article posted February 27, 2009 at 06:37 PM GMT0 • Reads 125

By Lesley

In Washington a softball story began. It was a collage softball team. Sara (for the first time in her whole career) hit a homerun. When she went to go touch the first base she missed it and still went to go touch the second. When she noticed her mistake she walked back. But she torn her ACL (torn her ligament.) When her team coach noticed that she hasn’t come she looks at the bases and sees that she is making her way on the ground back to first base. So the umpire says that he doesn’t know what to do. Her coach asks the umpire to check the rules and her team mates can’t help her at all because then they would take her out of the game. So two girls from the other team asks one of the umpire if they can help her. He looked at them in a bizarre kid of way and said that yes they can and go help her. So they went over to help Sara and ask her if they can help her and Sara said yes. So they picked her up and took her around the bases and when they reached every base they touched the bases with her left foot. All three of them started laughing because when they looked up they didn’t know what to expect. So when they looked up they didn’t see smiles, and laughter. They saw people crying being emotional with one another. When they reached home plate she made her first homerun. She couldn’t play anymore for the rest of that season. It was from that injury she couldn’t play anymore.

When I saw it I felt very emotional. I felt emotional because the other team players went to go help Sara (Other team).

When I Got Turned Into A Reindeer

Article posted March 16, 2009 at 06:11 PM GMT0 • Reads 140

By: Lesley Lechuga Gomez

It all happened when I was in my room. I was laying down minding my own business when a face appeared in the window. At first I couldn’t see the face of the person because it was all blurry. Finally when I saw the face of the person I couldn’t believe it. It was Santa Claus! When I asked him what he was doing here he said that if I can change into a reindeer for him. I said yes but we had to ask my parents. He said that he had already taken care of them and they said that you can change into a reindeer. But I had to be home on Christmas day at 9:00 am.

When we were heading to the North Pole I asked him why he was sending me. He told me that because one of the reindeers got hurt while they were training because she was daydreaming about candy and how much she loves it. Then she crashed in to a tree. When the other reindeers saw that she was hurt they took her to reindeer paramedics (elves). The reindeer paramedics said that she had hurt her leg really bad and that she couldn’t fly until it healed. When they heard the news they got a box full of names of all the good girls and boys. Then he said that my name wasn’t the first to be pulled out. I asked him then who was the first name to be pulled out he said it was a little boy that lived in France. We decided not to take him because he was to young.

Once we got there he took me to Mrs. Claus where  she would turn me into a reindeer. She gave me a cookie shaped in to a reindeer hoof with sprinkles all over it. I asked her what was this for. She told me that it was for me to eat and then I would turn into a reindeer. Then I asked her how long would it take for me to turn in to a reindeer. She told me not to worry about it. When I ate the cookie it tasted horrible. It was a slow process. first my hands started changing to hooves and then I felt something on my head. It was antlers it kinda of hurt though. Then everything else changed. After that I went to go look in a mirror. When I saw myself I couldn’t believe it. I really changed into a reindeer.

Then one of the elves came to take me to go meet the other reindeer. The first reindeer I met was Prancer. He was very nice to me. When I met the other reindeer they were very nice to me except Dasher because he hated the thought that Santa Claus needed a new reindeer for one night. They all told me not to worry if he liked me or not because that’s how he always is when theirs a new reindeer around. We heard one of the elves say that our training begins tomorrow.

When my training began they taught me how to fly. After you learn how to fly the real training begins. At first I had to learn not to crash into stuff and to make that no one will be able to see us (Although Santa Claus makes us invisible). When I first tried doing that I crashed into a lot of things like trees airplanes and a lot of other things. It took a while for me to learn how to not crash into stuff while I fly. Our next training was to fly in a group while being tied up in a harness. I did pretty well except that I had to be in the back. We kept on doing that until we got better and used to it. We heard one of the elves say that this was our last training session because tomorrow was Christmas Eve.

It was Christmas Eve and Santa Claus was getting ready to deliver presents to all the good boys and girls. The elves were helping each other get the harnesses on the reindeers. We left early in the morning because in some parts of the country it was already night over there. Mrs. Claus gave Santa Claus a scarf and some food just in case he got hungry or if he got cold. Then right before we left he called out on all our names and we left.

The first house we went to was in Germany. The way Santa Claus would get in is that he would turn into to dust and go through the chimney. If there was no chimney he would magicaly make one.  After he would leave the chimney would dissapear. If a house had a steep peaked roof then Santa Claus would throw some magic dust on the roof to make it flat so the reindeers wouldn’t slip and fall. Every hour Santa Clause would spray some magic dust one me just in case I would turn human again. If there was food inside the house for us. He would bring it to us and split it for us so we could all have some.

My house was the last one that Santa Claus went to. To change me back he gave a whistle he told me to close my eyes and blow on it. When I did I opened my eyes and found myself in my bedroom. Then I looked at my clock and it was 10:00. When I went to the living room I found a note in my pocket it said thank you for helping me and have a Merry Christmas.

Ligers

Article posted March 16, 2009 at 06:32 PM GMT0 • Reads 97

A Liger is a crossbreed of a male lion and a female tiger. It is one of the biggest cats. This mix of a lion and a tiger creates an offspring with more lionistic traits than if the reverse of a few had occurred. A liger looks like a huge lion with muted stripes on it. A Liger likes to swim. It goes against the nature of a lion. It is what creates the Liger species.

A Liger eats what their mom and dad eats which is raw meat.  They usually eat up to about 20 pounds a day.  Ligers weigh up to about 400 to 600kgs. The largest one is 800 kgs. The length of a Liger is 10 to 12 feet.

Ligers live for about 10 to13 years. They usually are held in captivity at zoos. The history of Liger dates last to the early 19th century in Asia. A ligress ( female liger) named Shasta was born in captivity at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. She was born on May 14, 1948. She died in 1972 at the age of 24. A Liger has a tiger  striping pattern on a lion backround.

Today at 1:00 pm we skyped with a class in Nelson, New Zealand. We first did our presentations (again). Then we sang Home Means Nevada. After we sang the song they sang another song but in maori. After they sang it in maori they sang it in english. They asked us questions like what kind of animals do we have here that they didn’t have over there. We said coyotes, and other animals that I can’t remember the names of. Then we asked them questions. One of them was what’s your favorite type of food. It was roast lamb, and chooks. Chooks is another word for chicken. They asked us how we get to school. We said by walking, riding in a car, riding a scooter, and riding a skate board. When Luis showed them the skate board they started saying awsome like it was there first time seeing a skate board. Their favorite music is by Greenday. Their favorite television shows are Spongebob and The Simsons. Their favorite movie is The Simson Movie. Favorite animal is the cheetah. A girl asked us if we had pets and some of us said yes. I told her all the animals I had. The little girl that asked us said that she had 7 dogs. At their school they only have grades 1-6. They only have 100 students at their school. There’s 4,000,000 people in New Zealand.

Pluto

Article posted March 31, 2009 at 10:39 PM GMT0 • Reads 151

The warmest thing about Pluto is that it is covered in ice. It has 3 moons named Charo, Nix, and Hydra. It was dicovered in February 18th 1930. Pluto’s the second biggest dwarf planet. It is not a planet anymore. But the most sensational thing about Pluto is that it is 2/3 the size of our moon.

The stupendous thing about the Moon is that it has 8 phases. It’s made out of rock, and there’s gravity on the Moon. The gravity on the moon is not like the gravity on Earth. There is Oxygen on the Moon. But the unimaginable thing about the Moon is that the distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 km

The phenomenal thing about Mercury is that it is a small planet. Mercury has an orbital diameter about a third of our own. It is said that even in ancient times Mercury has been over looked at. It is located approximately two and three quarter light minutes. But the astonishing thing about Mercury is that it has no cold winds.

Mars Sojourner

Article posted May 11, 2009 at 07:29 PM GMT0 • Reads 361

Today in class we read a book called “The Adventures of Sojourner”. It was about one of the pathfinders that they sent to Mars. It successfully landed on Mars without harm. It’s APXS  tested on these rocks called Yogi, Barnacle Bill, Soufflé, Scooby Doo, and Shark. On Sol 30 Sojourner set out for a Rock Garden. It was Sojourner next assignment to reach a rock called Shark. It would be Sojourner’s toughest assignments. Sojourner reach Shark on Sol 52. But six days later Sojourner’s backup battery ran out. The team on Earth tried to signal her, but no response came back. On October 1 the team got a signal from the rover, and on October 7 they only got one final signal and that was it. The team keeps on trying to signal the rover once every month, but no luck. The mission had cost about 266 million. Sojourner returned 2.3 million bits of information and more than 16,500 lander images.

Mars System

Article posted May 12, 2009 at 09:49 PM GMT0 • Reads 149

Our Mars system is about Air Supply. We built a greenhouse. It grows plants for oxygen and so we could eat the plants. Since we decided to use Hydroponics (Hydroponics are where you can grow certain plants on water) we used 4 certain plants. We used Lady Fingers, Cucumbers, Peas, and Tomatoes. It’s gray and it has water on the bottom and then a blocker to block the water from the surface then the plants. It also has a pipe so the oxygen can travel to the buildings on Mars. We built it with a shoe box and construction paper. We also used straws, plastic, aluminum foil, and paint. We used the shoe box as the greenhouse. The construction paper was for the water, the blocker, etc. The straw was for the pipe. The plastic was for the the roof so it could let sunlight through for the plants, and the aluminum foil was for the Solar Panels. We colored the aluminum foil black so it could really look like Solar Panels. We colored the Solar Panels with a sharpie. We used paint for the box.  We chose the color gray because black attracts the heat and white reflects the heat so we did a combination of both colors and we got the color gray.

Leaving My Mark

Article posted July 3, 2009 at 02:57 AM GMT0 • Reads 135

These past 3 years in this class has been a phenomenal experience for me. From the 7 random facts project to the Leaving My mark project has been incredible. One of my favorite projects was working with The Reno Bike Project. It was really fun because we got to make wiki pages, a PSA (Public Service Announcement) which was really fun to make, and we got to make posters. We got to take a field trip to their shop to check it out. It was really cool. A few of us (including me) got to take pictures and some others got to video tape a few things. Some of the pictures and the video that we took was in our PSA. Another project that was really fun was doing the 80 schools around the world project. It was awesome because we got to Skype with people from around the world which I think is really cool. We Skyped with classes from Argentina, China, Thailand, New Zealand, Florida, Canada, and Wisconsin. It’s fun meeting other people and get to talk to them about the projects that we do in class. One of my favorite blogging projects was the Reading to Learn project. I liked it because I got to learn about a lot of things that I wanted to learn about like Ligers, and Tigons. It has been an exciting year like I said one that I will never forget.

Science

When I saw the video and heard the speaker say that each of us is a keeper of a invisible zoo I found it strange and super weird and it just grossed me out. I mean to think that your keeping a huge invisible zoo in your body is just plain gross. I can’t even explain it. When the speaker said that we are never alone that we have creatures inside our bodies. I was freaked out even though I already knew  we had creatures like bacteria on us but to see the images of the bacteria and everything else we have I just don’t know how to explain it because it’s just so weird. I learned that we have something (not sure what it is) around our eyes and that scientist don’t know why we do and what they are there for. I also learned that bacteria always multiples it self into huge numbers.
