Resiliance

Article posted May 31, 2010 at 09:30 AM GMT0 • Reads 125

Resiliance is the ability to bounce back from hard situations. We all endure some degree of hardships throughout our life, and although i am 15 and the intensity of certain struggles might seem small compared to the hardships of older people, the hurdles ive had to face has helped me grow as an individual. The strength i have to overcome tough situations has also been manipulated by these events by managing my physical, emotional and spiritual state to bounce back from what life throws at me. In 2004 i moved to Australia from Argentina with my mum, dad and brother. Leaving my family and friends behind and entering a completely different world in a language i didnt understand and concepts i didnt grasp, proved to be a real challenge. I was emotionally unstable and mentally concentrated in trying to communicate with my peers at school and re-establish my life as a 10 year old. I, like my family, found strength within me to help me get through this developing stage of my life. It was determination, a positive frame of mind and hard work that got me over this hurdle and led me to achievements at the time seemed distant, almost impossible. Only 2 short years after arriving to Australia, i got selected as School Captain in my primary school and got to give various speeches and show leadership skills- a concept which contradicted my thoughts and desires when i first came here. Although it might seem small, it was a great achievement for me and it boosted my confidence skills as well as giving me that belief that i could really recover from hard situations.

I do believe i am a resilient person, and as a teenager i keep exeriencing struggles and will continue for the rest of my life, but these are building blocks which will eventually shape me as a person and redefine the meaning of resiliance within me. Yes, i do have emotional and physical breakdowns every now and then, and yes the whole idea of "bouncing back" can seem impossible at times, but it is these feelings that will make me stronger.

Amen to that!

PE on a rainy day

Article posted May 31, 2010 at 10:16 AM GMT0 • Reads 39

There are many aspects in PE, the theory part playing a big role. Many believe physical education is only enjoyable when practical activities are done outdoors, but this is a concept misinterpreted by many. On a rainy day there are many activities that as a class we could do indoors. Things such as class discussions, interactive activities, group work or even work sheets can all be performed inside. These activities develop skills practical work cant. Annalysing topics, mental health for instance, provides us with a broader knowledge of some of the things affecting people globally that connect to our understanding of health.

Class discussions are very effective in my opinion as they give the chance for each of us to express out thoughts and feelings on a topic within a controlled area were it is easier for everyone to listen and therefore to rebut to opinions or comments made. You learn a lot from your peers this way.

Having PE on a rainy day is not the end of the world, there are many activities that could be done inside, and with the intergration of laptops now, the options extend to a whole new level.

Theory lessons excercise the mind rather than the body which is equally important in the study of physical education which involves not only physical examinations but also the knowledge of the many things that affect the body from the inside.

Mental Health

Article posted May 31, 2010 at 11:48 AM GMT0 • Reads 34

Learning about mental health has made me realise just how important it is. I was struck by the proportion of mental disorders affecting people globally, I didn’t realise just how many people were suffering disorders such as depression, epilepsy and schizophrenia, all conditions which can be very harmful and lead to things such as suicide.

The videos provided were an excellent learning aid as the visual representation was very interesting as it is a form that isn’t usually used in other subjects.

This information provided the different perspectives people have on those suffering from a mental illness. They are commonly depicted as being dangerous and a threat to people, but having seen their own point of view I realised this was not the case.

I have a greater appreciation for mental health now as I realise how important it is to know about an issue that we are all so vulnerable to.

Having learnt a bit about it and seen those videos, I was appalled to see how many people suffering from illnesses as such go on untreated and seeing the conditions of which they are living expanded my view on the problem.

Fight Stigma

Article posted June 10, 2010 at 03:36 AM GMT0 • Reads 36

Mental Illnesses is very serious and it affects 1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males. There are many misconceptions about people who suffer these types of illnesses. Usually they are seen as dangerous and that they can never be normal. These views are wrong and do not apply to the situations people with mental illnesses go through.

Most people that suffer from a mental illness suffer from stigma.

Stigma is the mark of shame or disapproval given to a group of people by society, which labels them less worthy of respect and support than others.

It is important to know that when suffering from this, it is not your own fault, and it should never be taken upon ones self as that would make matters worse.

There are many ways people can help these people. Things such as listening to their problems and urging them to see a doctor can hel the way they go about their illness. Helping someone is very beneficial as having someone they can lean against, and talk to makes matters much easier.

400 million people worldwide are affected by mental illness. However, only 20% of them reach out for treatment. But why? It is because Individuals who experience mental health issues are often faced with discrimination that results from misconceptions of their illness. As a result, many people who would benefit from mental illness services often do not seek treatment for fear that they will be viewed in a negative way.

There are many things that us as individuals can do to help people fight stigma that can be very helpful to those most in need.

My Perfect Moment

Article posted August 3, 2010 at 10:55 AM GMT0 • Reads 36

Moving countries proved to be a tough experience, but nevertheless rewarding. While coming to Australia gave me many more opportunities and a safer environment to grow up in, the many kilometers of vast ocean that separated me and my close family was and continues to be an emotional struggle.

After two years of separation, i travelled to Argentina in 2005 to visit my family. Coming out of the plane and walking through the aiport after going through customs and finally seeing their faces waiting for us was THE perfect moment. As i ran eagerly and powerfully towards them, arms wide open, baggage hanging from every part of my body and hugged them with tremendous force, tears of joy and sounds of laughter filled the room. For me that was the perfect moment... beautifully constructed, driven by two years of repressed wait.

Everytime i revisit Argentina, i get the same buzz. For me, family holds a very special place in my life and i think the anticipation distance creates maximises the moment of reunion.

Drugs in our society

Article posted September 16, 2010 at 03:17 AM GMT0 • Reads 40

Drugs play a major role in our society. Accounting for thousands of deaths each year. In 1998, Tobacco was the cause for the most drug- related deaths. A lot of young teenagers are highly influenced by their peers and pressured into taking drugs. Today drugs in our society are a widespread problem because they are not only easily accessible, but also accepted into our modern day stereotypical images.

Drugs have come to affect not only those who take them, but also those around them. It can lead to psychological problems such as depression thus affecting relationships with close ones.

Drugs have a major impact in our community. It contributes to pollution and sometimes vandalism. Stronger measures should be taken in our society to help ease the impact drugs have on us. Such things such as restricted drinking and smoking areas should increase. Money could also be spent on better drug education in order to help newer generations avoid the tragic consequences of drugs.

Generation Y

Article posted October 27, 2010 at 08:18 AM GMT0 • Reads 36

Generation Y includes those born in the mid 1970's onwards, and from the very beginning it has been proved that this generation inspire great change across social, political and business landscapes.

Known as "Generation Net" this technologically advanced generation is said to be the most influential group since the baby boomers.

However not everyone thinks this generation in a positive frame. Older generations such as the baby boomers and gen X think of gen Y as controversial because they see the technological implementations as a negative thing. Gen Y grew up with mobile phones, Macs, internet, pay TV and Eminem in a world of AIDS, terrorism and drugs, but as a result, they are the most multi-tasking, adapted, team oriented bunch in history.

Apart from being impatient, highly ambitious and said to be "intensly stimulating and intensly frustruating", Gen Y is the most educated-mnded generation in history- they are the more optimistic about life and work than their predecessors, Generation X.

I am very proud of being part of generation Y because we are not only technnology wizards, but also said to be socially aware and tolerant in accepting cultural differences.

Simple Plan

Article posted October 31, 2010 at 02:07 AM GMT0 • Reads 44

Simple Plan’s video, How Could This Happen To Me, shows a car crash involving 2 young adults. The head on collision is between a man drinking alcohol while driving and a teenage girl. Absentmindedly the man swerves his vehicle head on to the girl’s car and as a result she dies at the scene. While the man survives he has to live with the guilt for the rest of his life for not only killing a young girl but also for impacting her family and friends.

At the time of impact between the two vehicles, we not only see the drivers propelling forward but also slow-motion shots of their families and friends being viciously thrown into walls and out windows in the middle of their everyday activities.

This highly graphical video creates awareness of just how many people are affected by accidents like these. More victims that people think and many lives are changed forever from a single happening.
