Dicey's Song

Article posted December 3, 2006 at 09:22 PM GMT0 • Reads 32

The book I read is called Dicey’s Song by Cynthia Voigt. Dicey’s Song is the second book after Homecoming in the Tillerman family series. After miles of walking the four Tillerman children have finally arrived to their grandmother’s house and they couldn’t be happier. At least three out of four are. Dicey finds herself having difficulties trying to stay together between growing up, school work, an after school job, and taking care of her family, but most of all letting go. Dicey is having a hard time getting used to not being in charged now that she has Gram to help her out. Dicey can’t help herself from taking control of things. But just when she starts managing to do so, her past comes back to haunt her in a devastating way.

Flow

I don’t think this book was very flowing. The story just went on and on about the same thing. There wouldn’t be much change in between chapters making the book boring in some way. It would sometimes be very boring by just telling about somebody’s day, what they did, and were they would do after that. In some parts of the book there wouldn’t be much excitement, drama, or suspense to catch the reader’s attention. I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone who likes a fast book or continuous events through out the story.

Word Choice

Cynthia Voigt did a great job in vocabulary and word choice with this book. She put a lot of colorful language into the book making it very interesting to read. She also used many descriptive words which made the story easy to follow by letting you picture whatever was going on at that moment in the book. I really liked the way she would describe objects and people physically so well that you could picture whatever it was from head to toe. Cynthia also used a good vocabulary making the book interesting to read.

Plot

I think that Dicey’s Song has a very good plot. The plot is full of emotions. It has a bit of everything varying from drama, excitement, suspense, and even sadness. This book has a great plot because it is based on Dicey’s feelings and what she goes through. This book has a good plot beside the fact that it tends to sometimes stay on one topic and not move on for a while. I would not recommend this book to people who do not like a sad book and people who look forward to a happy ending.

In conclusion, I have to say that Dicey’s Song was a really good book but defiantly not the best book I have ever read. I liked this book because it was very descriptive and easy to follow but I didn’t like that the book stayed on a topic for such a long time. I wouldn’t recommend this book to people who like fast-moving books or dislike sad endings. But I would defiantly recommend this book to people who like drama, excitement, and sorrow. Even though this book might be a bit on the long side, once you get to the end you’ll realize that it was worth reading.

I am posting my comment on here because the other way won't work.

I think you did a very good job on describing the book eventhogh it was a bit long. There were some minor grammar and spelling problems but your review was still very good. I also think your criteria was really good and detailed. Great job!!!
