Lunar Eclipse Blog Post

Article posted February 20, 2008 at 04:09 PM GMT-8 • Reads 31545

There will be a lunar eclipse of the Moon Wednesday night. It begins just before 6:00pm and is at its total between 7:00pm and 8:00pm. Your assignment is to SAFELY go outside and observe the eclipse and tell about your observations. Don’t go outside in the dark without someone being with you. You should go out 2 or 3 times to see the eclipse at different times. Describe colors of the Moon, what else you see, how warm or cold it is outside, who goes out with you. Then tell the story of your experience and what you saw and did.

If the weather is not good for viewing the eclipse then tell about trying to view the eclipse. Explain what happened each time you went out, what you did see, do, try to do. How did you feel. What was the weather like?

Pass-It On prompt 1

Article posted March 19, 2008 at 03:54 PM GMT-8 • Reads 90

Today's writing is a "Pass-It On" prompt to help us prepare for our "Mysteries of Harris Burdick" Collaborative Writing Project.

1) Begin writing on the topic. 2) When time is up (about 5 minutes or so) “Pass-It On” to the next writer. 3) Add your writing to what someone else started. 4) We will keep passing around until you get your story back. Then you bring the story to an end, edit it - and post it. FUN!!! Here is the prompt:

We had just sat down on the school bus that was taking us on our field trip when the bus driver stood up, turned around and in a loud voice said, “ We are not going on the trip you thought we were. Your class has won a trip to a very special place.”

The next thing we knew some kind of gas started to spray from the ceiling and we all fell asleep in our seats. When we woke up hours later we found out we had been taken to

Catch- Up On Blogs Week

Article posted June 2, 2008 at 10:59 AM GMT-8 • Reads 101

Over the course of the school year we have written many, many posts. For all kinds of reasons we all have posts that have never been finished and posted. Therefore go through your portfolio of blog posts and find posts that require editing and finishing. Then get them ready and post them to your blog.

Blog All Summer!

Article posted June 4, 2008 at 07:22 AM GMT-8 • Reads 123

Most teachers beg their students to read during their time off from coming to school each day. Why? Because like anything else we get better with practice and rusty without practice. So yes! READ! READ! READ!

This year we have come so far, and improved SO MUCH in our writing. Most of us now have access to a computer at home, and the rest probably know someone that does or somewhere (the same public library where you can get lots of books) that does. So also BLOG! Blog about what you do, learn and feel. Blog the good and the bad ... but BLOG!

I will put up ideas here from time to time as the summer goes along that you can write about too.

Remember too, that this is a great opportunity to communicate with your friends here in our school community, but also with those students all over the world in your blogging community. Keep those connections going. What are they doing? What books are they reading?

Also have a great summer! ... a great enough summer you WANT to write about it!

OK, so it has been a few days since school got out. How is it going? Tell us what you have been up to so far even if it isn't all that exciting and then leave comments for each other. Tyler already made a new post, leave him a comment after you write a new post yourself. Let's get the communications going!

While I'm In China

Article posted September 12, 2008 at 12:56 AM GMT-8 • Reads 84

Remember that while I'm in China this week I will try my best to put several blog post topics here. If I haven't posted one then you can choose a topic from your "Brainstorm List" or a new idea. Maybe something that just happened. Also check out the class Flickr page for photos from my trip. Who knows you might even find one here! I wish I could Skype in to see you, but the time change just won't allow that. Work hard, be good, and be supportive of each other like you usually are!!!

很快再见 - see you later in Chinese.

I'm In China!

Article posted September 15, 2008 at 06:44 PM GMT-8 • Reads 92

Hi class! I'm writing this Tuesday morning at about 8:30am but it is 5:30pm Monday night for you. I wanted to write earlier but my internet connection wouldn't work, so I had to wait until now. I flew 3 different jets - Reno to San Francisco, San Francisco to Korea, and Korea to Shanghai, China to get here. Altogether over 15 hours of flying!

When I woke up this morning and looked outside I noticed that there is a park and people were walking and excersizing and playing badminton there. If I get a chance I will put a photo or 2 on our Flickr page so you can see it. Here is your writing assignment for today.

Being in a place you are not familiar with can be kind of scary. You don't know people and customs and who you can talk to. Many of you have been a new student in school or have moved to a new place. Maybe, like Mr. Crosby you have gone on a trip to somewhere you don't know. Write about a time you were in an unfamiliar place or a new place, what was it like? What was scary? What was different? What happened?

I've got to go. They need me to go some where. I'll try to write again soon!!!

Mr. Crosby

More In China!

Article posted September 16, 2008 at 07:11 AM GMT-8 • Reads 98

Hi! I had a chance to walk around "Old Town Shanghai" today with a few of the other people that are at this conference with me. Go to our Flickr page and click on the image called "Stairway.jpg" to make it larger.

This is a stairway in an alley in Shanghai, China. Do you see the black and white cat near the top? He is looking upstairs. What do you think is up there? Does the cat see something it likes? Something it is scared of? What happens next? Tell a short story about the stairway. Include the cat if you'd like. Is it a mysterious place? Someone's home? A shop? A hidden entry to a king's castle? Think about a story, brainstorm ideas and then write it. It should be at least one side of a sheet of paper long. After you are done go look at some of the other photos I put on the Flickr page. You know how to get there through the class wiki page.

Bye for now!

7 Random Facts

Article posted October 1, 2008 at 12:43 PM GMT-8 • Reads 371

Copied from South Paris Collaborative Chat Blog:

We found the assignment 7 Random Facts on Dragon Blogs.  Other classes are also involved so we wanted to join. It gives us a chance to look for connections all around the world. We post 7 things about us in a paragraph, and everybody else posts 7 things about themselves. Then we can go around the world and learn about each other and leave comments.

This will be a fun way to learn about appropriate, safe things to say about ourselves online and how to leave good comments with other classes around the world.

Your job is to create a paragraph with 7 random facts about you. Keep them safe. Use good language. Stay focused. Be sure to edit carefully.

Dear Senator McCain and Senator Obama,

Article posted October 8, 2008 at 11:50 PM GMT-8 • Reads 154

What are the issues that are important to YOU that you want the next president to do something about? We brainstormed and discussed what issues concern us and asked our parents about what issues concern them (without asking who they are voting for, just what issues concern them the most). Then we revisited our list, answered questions and clarified what the issues were about. Next we each thought about which issues are most important.

Now your job is to write a post expressing your concerns to the presidential candidates. Explain what each of your important issues are, why they are important to you and why they should be important to the next president.

Be persuasive enough and maybe you'll have some influence on the decisions the next president makes!

He will somehow (that's up to you) magically turn you into a reindeer for the night and then turn you back into yourself. Tell how that happens and about all your experiences that night. Explain turning into a reindeer - does it tickle? hurt? what does it look like / feel like?  Explain / describe pulling the sleigh, landing on roofs, dealing with weather around the world ... what is fun? scary? touching?

Look over your blog posts and pick one to "remix." Make changes, edit out mistakes you made, add information you left out, add descriptive words and phrases ... basically use the skills you've learned since you originally wrote the post and make it better. Show us what you've learned! If you were a 4th grader in our class you must pick a post you wrote in 4th grade, If you joined us in 5th grade you must choose a post from 5th grade, and if you joined us this year you must pick a post from before the Holidays. It will be like old home week reacquainting yourself with an old friend!

"My Blog Post of the Week!" Award

Article posted February 18, 2009 at 09:21 AM GMT-8 • Reads 391

So that we are practicing reading critically we are each going to find a blog post that we choose as our "Blog Post of the Week!" As you read others' posts, cut and paste the URL of any post you think is well written onto an Appleworks page that you save as:

“My Blog post of the week of 2-20-09”

During our class discussion about what "well written" means, you said: Uses proper English and punctuation, good spelling (at least), explains well and describes well, shows doesn't tell (as much as possible).

Then on Friday we will each revisit those posts to select our post of the week. Once selected we will post a comment on that person's post explaining to them that this is your winner and ALL the reasons why.

Keep Posting - And Spread The Word!

Article posted July 5, 2009 at 04:34 PM GMT-8 • Reads 85

Really good to see some of you posting still. I am back from my trip now so I should be able to keep track more often when you do post. I think you will enjoy it more if more of you are blogging and commenting on each other's posts. So think about things to write about and when you see others from class get them to read and write and comment.

Tell what you did for the 4th of July, OR tell about a movie you've seen or would like to see, OR write about something going on in the news (like Iran or Michael Jackson or anything else). Even write about a post you think others should write about and then comment on each other's.

Bye for now!

Hello from Philadelphia!

Article posted January 29, 2010 at 09:52 AM GMT-8 • Reads 228

Hi! I made it to Philadelphia Thursday. Today I'm being shown a high school that is kind of like our classroom. All the students have white MacBook computers just like you. The difference is they are older so they have learned to use them to do more of their learning, just like I have explained to you WE want to be able to do. And we are getting there!

Like we talked about the other day, we have already come so far in our writing, posting to our blogs, knowing how to get to certain things through our wiki. Seeing these older students being able to do what WE want to be able to do is very exciting! I'm really looking forward to how our learning will change!

Be good, work hard, I'll see you Monday!

Make Their Day!

Article posted April 21, 2010 at 11:30 AM GMT-8 • Reads 128

This week we are going to practice making positive, supportive comments and make the day for younger bloggers at the same time! First, go to the first grade blog linked on our class wiki page. Then find a blog post that you make a connection with. You might have to deal with "invented spelling" that you have to decipher. EXAMPLE: It is a post about a cat and you have a cat too.

Next, say something positive about what they wrote or the picture that might accompany the post, like, "I like how you described your cat. I have one too."

Then ask them a question like: "My cat is white, what color is your cat?"

Edit it and post it to their site.

Have fun and MAKE THEIR DAY!

Leave it fairly simple like that, after-all they are 1st graders.

Please Join Our “High Hopes” High Altitude Balloon Project

Article posted May 15, 2010 at 11:47 PM GMT-8 • Reads 1246

Update 5/30/2010 - This is about how high the balloon went when it popped: 107,096 Feet OR 1,285,152 Inches OR 35,698.667 Yards OR 20.283333 Miles OR

3,264,286.1 Centimeters OR 32,642.861 Meters OR 32.642861 Kilometers

UPDATE 5/24/2010 - WE FOUND OUT TODAY THAT A LARGER BALLOON WILL BE USED, SO OUR HIGH HOPES SHOULD GO OVER 100,000 FEET (30,500 METERS) - thats almost 20 miles high!

We have “High Hopes” for our school, community and the world. We also are part of a project to send a high altitude balloon that will include a “payload” we get to build with a camera that will snap a photo every 5 seconds for the over 2 hours it will take to float up to over 80,000 feet. That is over 15 miles! We will also monitor temperature and other readings.

We thought it would be cool to include our “High Hopes” as part of the payload so they really will be “High Hopes!” It turns out we have room to include everyones' “High Hopes” and we want to include YOUR “High Hopes” too!

Just before we launch our balloon on May 27, 2010, we will copy all the comments you leave on this post with your own “High Hopes” to a CD or DVD and send them up with ours. That way your “High Hopes” will actually be raised up really, really high too!

We are doing other activities too. We are learning about lighter than air balloons, air pressure, the atmosphere and more. We have already written blog posts on this blog that include videos we produced about the science involved in balloon flight. In addition we have a wiki page we are designing to share our learning and news about our project. Here is a link. We also have photos from our classroom learning and will include photos from the balloon flight on our class Flickr page.

We want to thank teachers and students from The University of Nevada, Reno, for supporting and helping us with this project.

So if you or your class would like to participate, just leave your “High Hopes” in the comments on this blog post. We will do the rest.

Leave your comment in a form something like this:

I live in (Your City and Country) and my "High Hopes" for my school, community and the world are …

Teachers note - it you'd rather have your students write more than this ... say an essay or whatever feel free to do so - if they can post it as a comment we are open to that!

So click the comment link on this blog post and send us your “High Hopes” right away!

Here are some samples of our own “High Hopes” to give you some examples:

I live in Sparks, Nevada, USA and my High Hope for the world is to keep the world safe and a better place to live.

I live in Sparks, Nevada and my High Hope for the world is education for the kids that don't have a school to learn in.

I live in Sparks, Nevada and my "High Hopes" for the world include all people to stop violence and live in peace. But my Highest Hope for the world is to stop hunger and give people food.

I live in Sparks, Nevada, and My "High Hopes" for school include graduating high school and working hard to improve my grades. But my Highest Hope for school is to graduate college and get a good job that I like.

I live in Sparks, Nevada, and my "High Hopes" for my community include police because they keep us safe, hospitals because they can heal and fix the injuried and schools so we can graduate school.

I live in Sparks, Nevada and my High Hope for the world is ending homelessness because it's kind of sad that someone has no roof over their head.

DSC06593

Last week I took a trip to New York and while I was there I visited the Denton Dynamos (Mrs. Parisi's) class. I took with me 4 questions written by my students and sealed in individual envelopes for each of her students and they gave me questions to bring back to our classroom.

We also had a lesson and discussion about being safe online and how not to disclose information about yourself that could lead a stranger to you. So now you have to answer each other's questions without revealing anything dangerous about yourself or your family.

Have fun and be safe!!!

Being Helped By Someone

Think about a time someone helped you with something that was hard to do. It might have been hard because you didn't know how, or you weren't big enough or strong enough, or you were too scared to try, or you were hurt or stuck. Tell what you needed help with and why you needed help with it. Also tell who helped you and how they helped you. Tell how you felt before you got help, while you were being helped AND after you were helped. Make sure you describe things and show don't tell the story … help us feel what you felt and see what you saw.

Check Flickr for other photos I post!

Bye for now,

Mr. Crosby

Your Trip On The Space Shuttle

Article posted April 28, 2011 at 01:36 PM GMT-8 • Reads 356

Think about the video clips we've seen about space travel. How it looked, what the astronauts wore- helmets, suits - how nervous they looked. Remember how they shook from the power of the rocket engines. What being weightlessness looked like. Now write a story about what it would be like to launch into space. Describe getting in your suit. How nervous you feel. Getting in the space shuttle. How you feel just before launch, during launch, and when you finally get to space. Be very descriptive, check your work and make it fun for others to read!

Today's "Read to Learn" Just In Case

Article posted April 29, 2011 at 09:07 AM GMT-8 • Reads 375

We have had problems here with the internet, so I'm leaving this assignment now while I can get on. I haven't seen many of yesterday's writing showing up on the blog, so start out by finishing up yesterday's pieces so we can get them posted. More people than usual might be looking at them, so make sure your writing is your best!

Also, I am still uploading photos and video clips to Flickr, so look at those when you get done with your writing. Channel 4 interviewed me this morning over my phone because the internet here was not working well, and I mentioned you were writing things I was sending you. If I can still get on the internet later, I will definitely post new things here. I did get a good picture of the spider they are sending up (they brought it back for us to look at - yeah!!!), and I will put that up on Flickr when I can.

Bye for now!

Disappointment

Article posted April 29, 2011 at 11:30 AM GMT-8 • Reads 262

Hi Guys! We got to go down and watch the astronauts drive by in their special van on their way to the launchpad (I have video of it). Before their van came by a helicopter popped up into the sky and the person from NASA standing next to me said, "Here they come, when the helicopter rises up you know the "Astrovan" is on the way."

I got my cameras going and as the helicopter got closer to us (it was flying straight above the van) you could see soldiers sitting in it with their legs hanging out watching for any trouble. Next security vehicles came swarming in, and they were quickly followed by the astronauts. We all stated cheering and yelling.

Then their van stopped for a few minutes. Next it turned around and went back. The NASA person standing next to me had gotten a text message on her phone just before that and she showed it to me. It said that NASA engineers had discovered a problem with a heater that keeps the rocket fuel from freezing in space. Next we heard that they couldn't fix the problem right away and the space shuttle would NOT launch today.

We were all disappointed. Many people around me let out loud "OH NO's!" and others asked what was going on. You could see all the reporters and TV crews begin to scramble to get the story out.

So in the span of just a minute we all went from being excited and cheering and anticipating, to deep disappointment that this incredible experience was not going to happen today. We have since found out that it will be at least 3 days before it launches. Maybe it will launch on Wednesday when we launch our balloon!

Things can happen that disappoint us. Sometimes that disappointment can make us angry, frustrated and even fearful. But in my experience that disappointment often changes later. Things happen and we get to do what we missed later. Or because we couldn't get that or do that we get to do something else instead. Think about a time that you were disappointed about something you couldn't get or do, but later things worked out or you got over it. Write about a time that you were disappointed. Tell what you were disappointed about and what happened afterwards.

I am disappointed, but I get to come back to school on Monday and work with you to launch a balloon into near space. That makes my disappoint much easier to take. I'll post photos I took of the helicopter and Astrovan and more. And I will probably blog here some more today.

What Do You Think Will Happen?

Article posted May 4, 2011 at 06:06 PM GMT-8 • Reads 1543

We are sending up a high altitude balloon 100,000 feet. We are going to attach a green balloon, a blue balloon, an orange balloon and a Cheetos bag on our payloads. The orange one is full of air, the blue one is half full, and the green party balloon is filled about ¼ of the way with air. We are also attaching a Cheetos bag - snack size on the top of the payload. Next, we will send the payload up over 100,000 feet on a high altitude balloon. What do you think will happen to the balloons and chip bag? Leave a comment on this post or one of the student posts telling what you think will happen to each balloon and the chip bag. What effect will going up almost 20 miles high have? We will post photos later to show what happened. LEAVE YOUR ANSWER (HYPOTHESIS) by clicking on the "ADD A COMMENT" tab after the photos below.

Point of View Collaborative Writing Project

Article posted March 16, 2012 at 02:38 PM GMT-8 • Reads 62976

We've been working with our collaborators in New York on research for our writing project. We will take the point of view of the Aztecs and they will take the point of view of Cortes and the Spaniards. This week we will begin writing the actual stories and getting ideas for our illustrations. Stories are due in the Google Docs by Friday. So work hard and be creative!
